The retreatment
It is possible that a previous treatment was unsuccessful and your infection remains or returns, then you will be referred for retreatment. With a retreatment, the following steps will be followed:
- All the previous material used in the root canal needs to be removed, the root needs to be cleaned and brought back “in shape”.
- There can be internal damage from an earlier treatment, this needs to be repaired so that the correct shape can be made.
- The removal of old material can in some cases take longer before the shape can be made.
- Sometimes a retreatment is necessary if a bridge or crown needs to be placed on the tooth.
A retreatment is usually completed in one session, however occasionally a follow up appointment is necessary.
